Southern California artist Mic Doja (pronounced mike- doo- ja) is all about bringing real music back to Hip Hop. Micah Dunson born in Columbus, OH on Halloween of 1979. The youngest of five by 10 years, moved to Oakland, CA with only his parents in 1988. This was where music began to have an influence on him. Not too long after, they moved to down to Southern California city of Oxnard in 1990. This was where he found his talents for music. For over 15 years Mic Doja has been involved in music production from Hip Hop, to R & B, even Rock and Film Soundtracks. No matter the genre the message is clear that Mic Doja is about making great music that real people can enjoy, understand, and relate too.
Having been relocated from a very small east coast town to a large inner city on the west coast did take some time for adjusting, especially in the late 1980’s. But it was exactly this extreme that removed the wool from his musical eyes. Unable to freely come and goes as I could back east, Micah felt trapped and turned to music as his comfort. After work slowed for Micah’s father in the Bay Area, they soon moved down south to the city of Oxnard, outside of L.A. County. It was here that he was introduced to music first hand. For his 11th birthday present He got a bass guitar and began to take lessons. It wasn’t too long after taking lessons that he discovered that he could just as easily play a song by ear instead on reading the notes. Then in 1993 while in the back of a church he was introduced to the idea of writing his own songs to express what he was thinking or feeling. Later that year he purchased a keyboard and found it even easier to make new songs and play by ear than the bass guitar. From that moment forward he began making beats and writing songs to them, but kept it solely as a hobby.
Then in 1996 Micah met fellow school mate Calvin Brooks. Both lived each other, played the same sports and shared a common love for Hip Hop. Soon after they united to form a duo rap group and were invited to join a local crew of MC’s dubbed “Thug Fellas”. Under this crew Mic Doja, known as Mikdee at that time, and Cal B performed at high school rallies and other friend sponsored events, until the groups’ break up in 1998. Cal B later joined the military, as did Micah after high school graduation. As the years past, his talent and skill only became more refined. Focusing on bringing good quality music that is not focused on money, women, or cars is what Mic Doja strives to bring to Hip Hop with his music.
Currently Mic Doja is performing throughout the Ventura County and working on several new projects including the release of his second album, which is scheduled for release next summer 2010.
